The District of North Saanich and project partners wish to inform residents that restoration work undertaken by Peninsula Streams & Shoreline at Nymph Point Park is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. This important project will enhance the shoreline ecosystem along Tsehum Harbour and improve habitat for forage fish and other wildlife.
What's Happening
Restoration activities include:
- Shoreline stabilization: Installation of natural bioengineered materials (like willow wattle fencing and native plantings) to help reduce erosion and protect cultural and ecological features.
- Invasive species removal: Removal of non-native plants (e.g., blackberry, English ivy, Scotch broom) to support native vegetation and shoreline function.
- Habitat planting: Replanting of native shrubs, trees, and dune grasses to improve biodiversity and long-term resilience.
- Access improvements: Reconfiguration of pedestrian pathway to better define beach access while protecting natural areas.
Timing
Work is planned to take place through the spring, in coordination with ecological timing considerations to avoid key spawning and bird nesting seasons.
Why It Matters
Nymph Point Park is one of the few remaining beaches on the Saanich Peninsula that supports surf smelt spawning, a crucial element of the local marine food web. This restoration will help safeguard this rare habitat, support local wildlife, and build shoreline resilience in the face of climate change.
