Applying for a Building Permit
All applications for a Building Permit can be made at the Planning and Community Services Department. Application forms can be picked up at Municipal Hall during regular working hours or found within information package below. Each structure requires a separate application as per Sections 5.2 of the Building and Plumbing Bylaw 1150.
Building Permit Information Package
We can only accept complete applications which must include:
- Completed Building Permit Application Form
- Owner's Authorization Form if the applicant is other than the registered owner
- One set of the site plan
- One set of the construction drawings
- Assertation from a Certified Arborist that no trees will be impacted by development or a Tree Application Form
- Homeowner Protection Office approval (single-family dwelling)
- Vancouver Island Health Authority septic approval if applicable
- Engineering Schedule B from BC Building Code and Schedule D from Building and Plumbing Bylaw 1150 for any manufactured products, i.e. trusses, I joist, manufactured beams, etc.
- Schedule "A" from BC Building Code, if multiple professionals (architects, engineers) are required
- Proof of Liability Insurance if Schedule D from Building and Plumbing Bylaw 1150 is required
- Schedule "C", Owners Acknowledgement, from Building and Plumbing Bylaw 1150
- Certificate of title including copies of all covenants, easements, and rights of ways
- A hazardous materials assessment report if altering a building constructed prior to 1990
- A fee for processing the plans, as stated in Section 5.9 of the Building and Plumbing Bylaw 1150

Other Permits from Building Inspection
- Blasting Permit Application
- Construction Permit
- Driveway Access Permit Application
- Fire Place and Chimney Permit: issued at Municipal Hall, inspections conducted by Building Inspectors staff
- Fire Protection Equipment Permit (Plumbing Permit) - installation of sprinkler systems
- Heating Installation Permit (commercial or domestic oil-burner, gas, and diesel tanks) - must be applied for at Municipal Hall, with further inspections either conducted by the Building Inspectors or Fire Department staff. Issued at Municipal Hall.
- Plumbing Installation Permit - for new or altered plumbing systems or garden irrigation systems and associated inspections.
- Sign Permit (Building Permit Application Form) - all signs require a permit unless they are included within the exemptions noted in Section 3 of the Sign Bylaw No. 1489
- Soil Removal Permit and Soil Fill Permit
- Wrecking and Demolishing Permit (Building Permit Application Form) - permit to wreck, demolish, deconstruct or remove a building.
