The District would like to correct information shared earlier regarding when election signs may be displayed.
Under District of North Saanich Sign Bylaw No. 1489 (2020), signs promoting a candidate may be posted once the candidate has filed their nomination papers with the Chief Election Officer, provided all other requirements of the bylaw are met.
The campaign period begins September 19, 2026; however, this date does not generally prohibit election signs from being displayed during the pre-campaign period provided the requirements of the legislation have been met.
Elections BC regulates campaign financing and election advertising requirements, while local governments regulate the placement of election signs.
Separate provincial rules apply to signs placed on provincial highway rights-of-way, where election signs may only be displayed during the campaign period beginning September 19.
We recognize that our earlier information caused confusion. The District is updating its information to ensure residents and candidates have clear and consistent guidance.
