John Dean (1851-1943) was an ardent supporter of the Boy Scout movement and the outdoor life. He built a cabin near the summit of Mount Newton and in 1921 donated 13 hectares of land to the province. This initial donation (the first of its kind in British Columbia), along with subsequent donations from other individuals and additional acquisitions by the Provincial Government, has become the 180-hectare forest we now know as John Dean Provincial Park.
