The District recognizes there has been some confusion regarding when election signs may be displayed and would like to clarify the information provided to residents and candidates.
The District’s Sign Bylaw No. 1489 (2020) states that signs promoting a candidate may be posted once the candidate has filed their nomination papers with the Chief Election Officer. The bylaw also regulates the size, location, placement and removal of election signs within North Saanich.
Provincial legislation governs local election campaign activities. Where a municipal bylaw is inconsistent with provincial legislation, the provincial legislation takes precedence. For the 2026 General Local Election, the campaign period begins September 19, 2026.
The District recognizes that the wording of its Sign Bylaw and information provided regarding provincial election requirements have caused confusion. We are clarifying our information to ensure residents and candidates have consistent guidance.
Elections BC administers and enforces campaign financing and election advertising requirements under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, while local governments regulate matters such as the location, size and placement of election signs.
