North Saanich wins UBCM Community Excellence Award

The District of North Saanich was successful in winning a UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) Community Excellence Award in the category of Partnerships, with the focus on Local Government Partnerships Supporting Physical Activity & Healthy Living, for our collaborative community effort to build the North Saanich Free Ride Bike Park. Mayor Alice Finall and Councillor Peter Chandler were present to accept the award which was announced at the Awards Breakfast in Vancouver on Thursday, October 1, 2009.

The creation/construction of the North Saanich Free Ride Bike Park is the result of collaboration between the community who formed a society, “The Friends of the North Saanich Mountain Bike Park Society” and the District of North Saanich who entered into a partnership agreement with the Society.

The unique aspect of this partnership is that the District of North Saanich, by managing the more mundane aspects of maintaining a park (such as regular safety inspections, vandalism repair, hazardous tree removal, and drainage issues) has allowed the Society a high level of autonomy with the creativity of the park design and the components incorporated within the park. With the support of local professional dirt jump riders, the Society has been able to facilitate the creation of what will be a world class venue that has been entirely funded by local businesses and residents. The costs of building such a facility would have been an impossible undertaking for the District of North Saanich alone. It has been the good will, hard work, and generosity of this community which has made this initiative possible. To date, the community volunteers who have just “shown up” when the call for a work party happened have contributed over 500 hours.

Work continues on the North Saanich Free Ride Bike Park on phases five through eight. There are many volunteer opportunities, both financial and physical, available to all ages. If you wish to be a part of this award winning park, please contact the Society by visiting their website or by calling Volunteer Executive Director, Denis Paquette at 250-656-1131.
