The Heritage Advisory Commission is an advisory commission to Council and consists of volunteers who live in North Saanich. Appointments to this Commission are made annually by the Municipal Council. |
|
The Heritage Advisory Commission is made up of 7 regular members, 1 Council Liaison and 1 Secretary. All members are appointed by Council and only regular members have voting privileges. At the first meeting of each year the Commission elects its own Chair and Vice Chair. The role of the Council Liaison is to represent the Municipal Council at Commission meetings and serve as a communication link between Council and the Commission. The Liaison presents Commission minutes to the Committee of the Whole and responds to questions from Council or Committee members regarding activities of the Commission. |

What is Considered Heritage?
Anything that, by its character, interest, age or value contributes to and enhances our knowledge of our community’s past, ranging from buildings, sites, farms, roads and parks to trees, animals, marine and plant life, and natural resources.
This could include:
- A place or site identified with an historical event or with a person or group who significantly contributed to the culture and social development of the municipality, province or nation.
- A building outstanding for architectural design, detail, materials and/or craftsmanship.
- A significant heritage grouping, vista, streetscape, cluster, or specific feature of the landscape or a neighbourhood.
- Trees, animals and plants indigenous or special to North Saanich.
Heritage Strategic Plan
On March 12, 2007, North Saanich Council adopted the District's first Heritage Strategic Plan (HSP). The plan provides a focus for developing and managing a heritage program for North Saanich that supports the community’s heritage values. It was prepared by Don Luxton and Associates Inc. in consultation with the Heritage Advisory Commission, Council, staff, community groups and residents of North Saanich. The HSP includes a vision statement, heritage objectives, eight high-level strategies and a list of actions to achieve the District's heritage objectives. A few initiatives from the list will be undertaken each year over the next five years.
For more information on the Heritage Strategic Plan, please email Adam Fitch at afitch@northsaanich.ca or call: 250-655-5470.

What is a Statement of Significance?
We have completed a ‘Statement of Significance’ (SOS) (Part 1, Part 2) for the properties on the Heritage Register.
This is part of the required documentation that is submitted for inclusion on the BC and Canadian Registers. The SOS for a historic place is made up of three sections: ‘Description of Historic Place’, ‘Heritage Value’, and ‘Character-Defining Elements’. The SOS provides guidance to property owners, planners, architects and others involved in the conservation or rehabilitation of historic places. The SOS helps identify the character-defining elements of the place that should be protected when undertaking a project. It may also be used to assess projects seeking funding under heritage programs.
