The Environmental Advisory Commission is an advisory commission to Council and consists of volunteers who live in North Saanich. Appointments to this Commission are made annually by the Municipal Council. The purpose of the Commission is to advise Council on environmental matters within the District referred to the Commission by Council. Although meetings are open to the public, debates with applicants or members of the public over current issues usually occur at Committee of the Whole and other public forums rather than at Commission meetings. If the Environmental Advisory Commission wishes to comment on a matter which has not been referred by Council, the Commission should request the Council Liaison to bring the matter to Council's attention. The Council can then determine whether it wishes to refer the matter.

The Environmental Advisory Commission is made up of 9 voting members, 3 student voting members, 1 Council Liaison and 1 Commission Secretary. All members are appointed by Council and only regular members have voting privileges. At the first meeting of each year the Commission elects its own Chair and Vice Chair. The role of the Council Liaison is to represent the Municipal Council at Commission meetings and serve as a communication link between Council and the Commission. The Liaison presents Commission minutes to the Committee of the Whole and responds to questions from Council or Committee members regarding activities of the Commission.
