Property Taxation

On-line Property Tax Services:

Assessment and taxation information on properties in North Saanich is now available to the general public on-line. In addition, property owners are able to check their account information and claim their Provincial Home Owner Grant using the access code found on the top right hand corner of the Property Tax Notice.

To access this program, go to On-line Property Tax Services and follow the on-screen instructions.

We would like to hear from anyone who uses this program to determine how easy (or hard) it was to claim the home owner grant and/or pay your taxes. Your feedback is very important to us.

Assessment:

The Assessment Authority of British Columbia is responsible for the assessed value of all real property. Notices of assessed values are mailed to each property owner at the end of December. These values may be appealed to the Court of Revision no later than January 31. Following the Court of Revision, the Assessment Authority issues the Revised Assessment Roll. This roll is used to determine the tax rates required to generate the taxation revenue determined by Council in the Financial Plan. It is important to note that a large general increase in assessed value will not necessarily result in a large tax increase as the tax rates are based on the overall assessed values for the District.

Tax Notices are mailed out the end of May with payment due the first business day of July.

Pre-Authorized Payment Plan:

After your current property taxes have been paid, you may be interested in the District's Pre-Authorized Payment Plan. This program allows property owners to set up automatic monthly payments towards the next years' current taxes. The first payment will be August 15 and the last payment will be May 15. There are no withdrawals for the months of June and July. All prepayments are locked in until the next tax due date and earn interest.

Penalty on overdue Taxes:

A 5% late payment penalty is applied to payments received after midnight July 4, 2011. A second 5% late payment penalty is assessed after midnight September 30, 2011 on outstanding balances. These penalties also apply to unclaimed Home Owner Grants. It is not necessary to make a payment in order to claim the grant.
