To assist you in starting your business in North Saanich, some basic steps are listed below. Please note that each business is unique. Depending on your situation, there are additional approvals that may be required. When developing your business plan and before you make any financial commitments, be sure to contact the Development and Community Department to discuss your business plans. Before opening your business, it is incumbent upon you to contact Development and Community Services to ensure you have all the required permits in place.

Basic steps to follow when establishing a business in North Saanich:

Verify the address where you wish to establish your business;
Check the Certificate of Title for the property to ensure that there are no covenants or other
restrictions that may affect your business plans, especially if your property is located in the
Dean Park area;
Contact the Development and Community Services Department at 655-5470 to confirm that the
zoning and parking provided on the site are appropriate for your business and to determine if your property is in a Development Permit Area;
Check what type of permits may required for you make any physical alterations to the building
where you plan to operate your business or if you are constructing a new building;
A business license must be obtained to operate your business. You cannot run a business without a business licence.

Other permits that may be required are:

If the property is in a Development Permit area, any changes to the exterior of your place of business or the construction of new buildings will likely require a development permit;
If you plan to renovate or build to accommodate your business, a building permit may be required. Bring your plans to the Development and Community Services Department for review. Once your plans are reviewed and a building permit is issued, you may begin construction. Inspections are conducted over the course of construction. Once building and renovations are completed, a final inspection is required. Inspections must be booked in advance. Once your building passes inspections you will receive an occupancy permit;
Plumbing and gas permits are required if building or renovation plans will need plumbing and gas alterations;
A sign permit is required before you can erect any signs on the exterior of the building or the property.
